entrepreneurial networking in different national contexts

In May Sara Vaerlander and Ingela Sölvell went to Nariobi, Kenya, to interview 20 start-up entrepreneurs and visit incubators in different industries.

This data collection was done within the frames of the project ‘The structures, meanings and practices of entrepreneurial networking in different national contexts’ as a follow-up to our previous data collection in Chile in November. The motivation behind this project was the observation that entrepreneurship research in highly westernized and there is a dearth of research in non-Western contexts. Thus, we oftentimes extrapolate entrepreneurship as being a global concept with the same meaning. With two data sets from two largely different contexts at hand, we are starting to discover intriguing differences in the ways in which entrepreneurs ‘do’ entrepreneurship, i.e. they ways in which they talk about their role as entrepreneurs, their motivations, their challenges, and their use of their networks. In an upcoming conference paper ‘Culture as motivation and justification in entrepreneurship: A dual cultural framework’ accepted for the ACERE conference, we invoke the dynamic constructivist view on culture to show how entrepreneurs in the different contexts craft the meaning of the role as entrepreneurs by invoking radically different cultural elements.
