Research Programs at EIJS

The European Institute of Japanese Studies (EIJS) has four broad research programs.

  • The Japanese economy: Current emphasis is on Japanese trade and industrial policies, particularly competition and technology policy, and corporate strategy.
  • Japan and the European Union: This program examines trade and investment links between Japan and the EU, as well as the development of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) process.
  • Japan in the world economy: Projects focus on Japanese business, politics, and foreign aid in an international context.
  • East Asian development: Projects examine Japan, China, Korea, and the ASEAN countries in the global economy.

Leading scholars from around the world regularly visit EIJS and use its facilities as a research base. Senior faculty at EIJS participate in many external joint projects with well-known institutions and scholars in Europe, Japan, other parts of Asia, the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand.
