European Japan Advanced Research Network (EJARN)

EJARN is a European research network promoting policy-relevant research on Japanese politics, economics, security, and Europe–Japan relations through multidisciplinary academic collaboration.

EJARN mission

The European Japan Advanced Research Network (EJARN) is a European academic network that promotes policy-relevant research on Japanese politics, economics, security, and Europe–Japan relations.

Japan is seeking new international partnerships, and Europe is an increasingly important part of Japan’s international strategy. At the same time, Europe and Japan have yet to develop cooperation that fully matches their shared ambitions at regional and global levels.

EJARN provides expertise that helps identify policy areas where Europe and Japan can achieve measurable results.

The network brings together internationally recognized researchers from across Europe, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean and from the Iberian Peninsula to Eastern Europe.

EJARN members specialize in areas including:

  • business, finance, and trade
  • international security
  • environment and climate change
  • innovation and science
  • international development assistance
  • policymaking and regulatory institutions
  • migration, demographic transformation, and social policy

EJARN takes a multidisciplinary approach, with particular emphasis on politics and economics, and welcomes both established and innovative methodologies and perspectives.

EJARN scholars contribute:

  • advanced Japanese language skills and extensive fieldwork experience in Japan
  • strong collaborative networks with Japanese scholars and policymakers
  • peer-reviewed international research output

The network advances its research agenda through policy briefings, academic publications, media contributions, conferences, and seminars.

EJARN works closely with academia, the European Union, the government of Japan, European national governments, business organizations, and NGOs to strengthen policy-relevant research on Japan and Europe–Japan relations.

The network’s long-term ambition is to establish itself as a leading center of academic excellence in Japanese studies.

EJARN is based at the European Institute of Japanese Studies (EIJS) at Stockholm School of Economics.
