PhD Program

Doctoral Program in Asian Economy and Business at SSE

Asia is one of the world’s fastest-growing economic regions, and many expect the continent to continue expanding in economic importance. At the same time, Europe faces a shortage of young professionals who can operate effectively in major Asian languages while also understanding how business and management function in East Asia.

The European Institute of Japanese Studies (EIJS) at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) aims to help address this challenge through its Doctoral Program in Asian Economy and Business. The program is designed to strengthen specialized competence and knowledge among talented young European economists and researchers.

The program brings together a small group of highly qualified doctoral students with expertise in Asia and knowledge of at least one major Asian language. Participants are integrated into SSE’s broader PhD program and academic environment.

The first three students were admitted in August 2012, followed by one additional student in August 2017. During the four-year program, PhD candidates work alongside academic Asia specialists and professionals with extensive experience from Asia, creating the foundation for a long-term international network.

A central objective is to ensure that doctoral research remains closely connected to issues relevant to companies operating in Asia. Current PhD candidates are sponsored by CBAB, Ericsson, and Volvo.

EIJS continues its fundraising efforts and invites companies to sponsor PhD candidates. Recruitment is conducted internationally, and applicants with knowledge of an Asian language — preferably Japanese, Chinese, or Korean — are particularly encouraged to apply.

In addition to Business and Management, the program also welcomes applicants specializing in Economics or Finance.
