Discover our event series on innovation, security, and resilience

How are changing security threats creating new challenges and opportunities for technological innovation, business, and future leaders?

As geopolitical tensions, cyber threats, and technological developments change the security landscape, governments, businesses, and other organizations face growing pressure to strengthen their resilience and adapt to new risks. At the same time, these developments are creating new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration.

Together with the Center for Security and Resilience (CfSR), the SSE Tech Initiative will explore these developments through a new event series. Featuring industry professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and other experts, the series examines how technology is changing the way we prepare for, respond to, and manage crises, and what this means for future business leaders.

The series looks at how AI, autonomous systems, and other emerging technologies are changing the security and defense industry, including the growing role of startups and how established companies are responding to the pace of technological change. It also explores how existing technologies can find new applications across civilian and military contexts, and what businesses and institutions can do to strengthen their cybersecurity and resilience.

Beyond individual companies and technologies, the series examines how collaboration, secure supply chains, and technological independence can strengthen Europe's ability to respond to emerging threats. Throughout the series, we also critically reflect on the ethical and legal implications of new security technologies, particularly questions of human oversight, accountability, and responsibility.

Learning outcomes

Through the series, students are encouraged to:

  • Understand why security, technological dependence, and crisis preparedness are becoming important considerations for businesses and their leaders.

  • Explore how changing security needs create new markets and opportunities for technology-driven entrepreneurship and innovation.

  • Examine the strategic decisions and trade-offs companies face when developing, investing in, and adopting security-related technologies.

  • Critically evaluate the risks, limitations, and ethical implications of these technologies, particularly when safety and human lives are at stake.

  • Reflect on the responsibilities of future business leaders when technological innovation, commercial interests, and societal security intersect.

The series is intentionally interdisciplinary and designed to complement SSE’s existing programs by creating a space for reflection, discussion, and dialogue among students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and practitioners.
