Higher Seminar in Economics: The End of Privilege
4/14/2021, 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM
Department of Economics is welcoming you to online seminar with Jonathan Heathcote, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, presenting "The End of Privilege".
The US net foreign asset position has deteriorated sharply in the past decade, and now stands at an unprecedented negative 65 percent of US GDP. What has driven this decline, and what are the welfare consequences for US households? We show that new borrowing accounts for only a small share of the decline, while the majority reflects revaluation of large gross positions. In particular, the US has large equity and FDI liabilities, and the sharp runup in US asset values over the past decade has inflated the value of these liabilities.

How Do Political Parties Respond to Gender Quotas? Evidence from South Korea
3/17/2021, 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM
Department of Economics is welcoming you to online seminar with Jay Lee, post-doc at CREST, joining the Department of Economics at Stockholm University as Assistant Professor in September 2021. Jay Lee will present "How Do Political Parties Respond to Gender Quotas? Evidence from South Korea" (with Martina Zanella).
Although gender quotas in politics are one of the most popular affirmative action policies worldwide, they might prove ineffective if they suffer from active resistance by incumbent males. South Korean municipal council elections provide us with a rare opportunity to observe how highly male-dominated political parties react to gender quotas. Gender quotas were implemented in only one out of two independent election arms, allowing us to observe what happened in the arm unconstrained by quota. We analyze the effect of the quota on parties' selection of candidates, by exploiting the discontinuity in the intensity of the quota at given cut-offs of council size.

Empowering Women Through Radio: Evidence from Occupied Japan
3/10/2021, 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM
Department of Economics is welcoming you to online seminar with Yoko Okuyama,
Assistant Professor of Economics, Uppsala University. Yoko will be presenting the topic "Empowering Women Through Radio: Evidence from Occupied Japan ".
This study examines the impact of women's radio programs that the US-led occupying force aired in Japan (1945-1952) to dismantle the prewar patriarchal norms. Using local variation in radio signal strength driven by soil conditions as an instrumental variable, I provide causal evidence that greater exposure to women's radio programs increases women's electoral turnout, which further translates into a greater vote share for female candidates. This positive effect contributes to women's greater representation in the national legislature: had there not been women's radio programs in place, the number of female winners would have been halved.
