Project in Rwanda receives the Gun and Einar Larsson scholarship

Students Katarina Li Qiu and Buene Gjana have been awarded the Gun and Einar Larsson Scholarship 2023 (GELS) for their project “The Making of Rwanda’s Physical Education Curriculum”.

The Gun and Einar Larsson Scholarship offers outstanding students at Stockholm School of Economics the opportunity to create and realize innovative projects abroad according to their own design. The aim of the scholarship is to offer experience and personal development outside of the academic realm that benefit the student’s education and professional aspirations.

The making of Rwanda’s physical education curriculum

Katarina and Buene were awarded the scholarship for their project “The Making of Rwanda’s Physical Education Curriculum.” They have a long-standing interest in sports education through social entrepreneurship and its impact on the country’s future development.

“With their passion, ambition, and great drive, Katarina and Buene have demonstrated the qualities that characterize SSE students with great future potential. Their strong characters in combination with a clear and feasible project idea, to promote the importance of sports participation in education in Rwanda, made them stand out in the competition from a dozen other strong applications. Their self-designed projects provide great potential for growing and developing the qualities and skills required to create a way forward in today's global society,” said the GELS alumni network.

Project summary

The application for the Gun and Einar Larsson Scholarship entails a project in the East African country, Rwanda. In today’s society, solving global challenges through social entrepreneurship is key in moving forward. The goal is to create a long-term and scalable impact. Through their project they wish to understand how physical activity contributes to academic achievements and developments within a country and get a better understanding of Rwanda's development opportunities and its possible collaborations with Sweden.

“We want to promote the importance of sports participation in education in Rwanda, a fast-developing country where the education of its future generation will determine its outlook. The goal of the project is to establish a sports culture in schools through a series of workshops and to create a plan that the school can use and continuously promote in the future. The long-term aim of our project is to establish a solid network with private, public and non-profit actors, enabling the creation of Rwanda’s Physical Education Curriculum.”
