Sweden through the crisis
“Sweden through the crisis” was a research initiative at the Stockholm School of Economics examining the economic, organizational, and societal effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project brought together researchers from across disciplines to analyze Sweden’s response and its broader implications.
About the initiative
“Sweden through the crisis” was launched in 2020 as a collaborative research effort involving more than 80 researchers. The project explored how and why Sweden’s approach to the pandemic differed from other countries, and what lessons could be drawn for business and society.
The initiative resulted in a comprehensive report consisting of more than 40 articles, organized into eight thematic areas. These themes covered topics such as public policy, finance, markets, innovation, sustainability, society, leadership, and education.
Research themes
The project addressed a wide range of questions related to the pandemic, including:
- how governments and organizations responded to uncertainty
- how markets, supply chains, and consumer behavior were affected
- how digitalization and new ways of working accelerated
- how the crisis influenced sustainability, leadership, and education
Together, these perspectives provided a broad view of how a global crisis reshapes economic and societal systems.
Output and collaboration
The research was also communicated through external collaborations, including a video series produced in partnership with the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company (UR).
The full report and related materials remain available as a resource for understanding the impact of the pandemic and for informing future research on crisis management, resilience, and economic transformation.
Today
While the initiative is no longer active, its findings continue to be relevant for research on resilience, crisis response, and long-term societal change. The project reflects SSE’s role in contributing research-based insights during periods of significant global disruption.
