Stockholm Seminar on Japan, December 8
This seminar will examine the growing role of foreign employees, entrepreneurs, and residents in contemporary Japan. At the end of 2024, more than 3.7 million foreigners lived and worked in Japan—a 78% increase since 2014. Although still just over 3% of the total population, this rapid rise in foreign residents in a country long known for cultural homogeneity and skepticism toward immigration has generated both new opportunities and new tensions for Japanese companies, markets, and political actors. Drawing on his research and personal experience, Professor Edman will discuss how foreign residents are being integrated into Japanese society and what role they may play in the future evolution of Japan’s economy.
Jesper Edman is Professor of International Management at Waseda University’s School of Commerce in Tokyo. He received his PhD from the Stockholm School of Economics and has been working in Japanese academia since 2011. His research focuses on foreign firms and workers in international business contexts, with recent work examining how nationalism and geopolitics shape multinational enterprise strategies. His research has appeared in the Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Studies, among other leading journals. He serves on the editorial review boards of the Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, and Global Strategy Journal, and is the Chair of the Research Committee of the International Management Division at the Academy of Management.
