Electives and seminars within CIVICA

CIVICA is an alliance of 10 top European universities in the social sciences, business, humanities, and public policy fields. As part of a community of 72,000 students and 13,000 faculty members, you’ll benefit from shared courses, cross-border collaboration, and a strong focus on civic responsibility, public impact, and real-world learning — all designed to prepare you for leadership in a global context.

Through the CIVICA alliance, SSE MSc students can:

  • Choose flexible formats that work with your schedule: online, hybrid, or short in-person intensives

CIVICA Honours Seminars 

3–5 days. In person. Big topics. European peers.  

These short, intensive seminars bring together a select group of Master students from across the CIVICA alliance. Each edition focuses on a major global or European challenge, such as climate change, digitalization, inequality, migration or democracy. You’ll work in small international teams, attend faculty-led sessions, and engage in collaborative group work and cross-cultural activities. It’s a fast-paced, immersive way to deepen your understanding of complex issues and make friends and connections across Europe.

Who should apply? Curious, engaged students eager to broaden their perspectives 
No tuition or participation fee. Travel and accommodation will be funded.

CIVICA Multi-Campus Courses (MCC)

Study from Stockholm – but think across borders. These online courses are co-designed by faculty across multiple CIVICA universities and open to all students within the alliance. You will join live sessions with peers from other countries, work on interdisciplinary topics, and collaborate across time zones and perspectives. 

When? Fall and Spring semesters 
Where? Fully online 
Certificate? Yes – CIVICA Multi-Campus Course Certificate 

Who should apply? Students looking for academic depth and cross-cultural learning without travelling 
These courses are free to take and recognized across CIVICA universities. Courses typically carry ECTS credits transferable to your degree. 


CIVICA Joint Courses (JC)

Blended teaching. Dual institutions. Global insight. 
Joint Courses are co-taught by faculty from two CIVICA universities and typically mix online and in-person components. You’ll attend sessions alongside students from both schools, engage in cross-campus teamwork, and learn through a blended format. 

When? Semester-based 
Where? Hybrid: online + in-person (depending on course) 
Certificate? Yes – CIVICA Joint Course Certificate 
Who should apply? Students who enjoy collaborative, cross-campus learning 
Credits vary by course and may be recognized in your local study plan. Spots are limited. 

CIVICA Digital Mobility Courses

Customize your curriculum and develop teamwork skills by attending online, credit-bearing elective courses within the CIVICA network, either as an alternative or complement to physical mobility.
