Örjan Sjöberg - Professor

Örjan Sjöberg holds the chair in economic geography at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), and has a background in human geography, economics and area studies. In addition to teaching across a wide number of programs at SSE, he has a considerable experience in addressing audiences in a variety of settings, both in Sweden and abroad.

Professional/Academic qualifications:
Holding a PhD in human geography from Uppsala University, Örjan joined SSE in 1991 under a dual appointment with the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics and subsequently the Asia program at the European Institute of Japanese Studies. In 2001 he was appointed full professor in economic geography at the Department of Economics.

Areas of special interest:
His research has focused on economic development, labor markets and migration/urbanization outcomes of (changing) economic systems, with a primary focus on the Baltics, the south-western part of the Balkans and South-east Asia.

Other qualifications:
In parallel to his academic appointments, over the years Örjan has continuously taken on a number of consultancies, predominantly on behalf of Sida and ILO, but also in cooperation with, e.g., the UK Department for International Development and the World Bank. Together this has taken him on field research and other assignments to countries as diverse as Albania, Bosnia, Cambodia, China, Croatia, Estonia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Latvia, Tajikistan and Vietnam.
