Staffan Holmberg appointed Executive Director of SSE’s Center for Security and Resilience

The Center for Security and Resilience (CfSR) at the Stockholm School of Economics has appointed Staffan Holmberg as its new Executive Director. With a strong background in security work, research, and civic engagement, he will help lead the center’s efforts to strengthen society’s resilience to future crises.

Holmberg assumes his new role on October 1. He brings more than 20 years of experience in academic research, operational security, organizational development, and community work. His previous roles include work within the prison and probation services, youth care, and sports – including leading sustainability initiatives at Djurgården Football. His ability to combine strategic thinking with hands-on implementation – particularly in areas related to safety, security, and long-term societal development – will be central to his work at CfSR.

At the center, Holmberg will work alongside Director Professor Martin Carlsson-Wall and the rest of the leadership team to further develop CfSR as an independent platform where academia, business, public authorities, and civil society come together to boost resilience to everything from cyberattacks to supply chain disruptions.

“We’ve built a society that relies heavily on just-in-time systems. To make it more resilient, we need to lean on our strengths while at the same time learning from other ways of operating. That means drawing on expertise beyond the traditional silos. CfSR offers a space where researchers, business leaders, and practitioners can meet and collaborate in new ways,” says Staffan Holmberg.

A key player in building a more resilient Sweden

CfSR was established to address today’s complex security challenges and functions as a neutral space for developing solutions before, during, and after crises. Its focus areas include cybersecurity, procurement, innovation, public–private partnerships, and management of critical infrastructure.

Professor Martin Carlsson-Wall, Director of CfSR, sees great potential in the new appointment:

“Staffan Holmberg combines academic insight with broad practical experience and deep social commitment. He is exactly the right person to help us grow the center into a global platform for research and partnerships in crisis preparedness, civil defense, critical infrastructure, and innovation-driven business models.”
