What sport can teach us about our careers and ourselves

How do we handle challenging transitions from one chapter of life to another - and what can such moments teach us? During a Sport Talk with Anna Stenberg, we gained valuable insights into this question and many more.

On February 12th, during Sports & Business Week at Stockholm School of Economics, students gathered at Ragnar for a valuable opportunity to learn from the experience of Anna Stenberg – former elite gymnast, founder of WES (Women Executive Research), and current Chief Platform Officer at Kinnevik.

Throughout her presentation, Anna Stenberg underlined the importance of lessons she learned during her athletic career. Perseverance, passion and approaching failures as opportunities to grow were all crucial in shaping her leadership style and professional journey. Remaining consistent in challenging times and staying humble during moments of success were essential to a successful and fulfilling career.

An important message that repeatedly resurfaced during the discussion with students was that of remaining true to oneself and not limiting one’s identity to one label. Anna Stenberg spoke of the challenges she faced when transitioning from her career as a gymnast and navigating the search for a new identity. While demanding, this period also proved to be crucial in helping her better understand her goals for the future.

When asked about advice for students when moving forward, she encouraged them to challenge the status quo: do not simply follow trends. Instead, follow your heart and seek environments that support growth and your pursuit of passion. The right environment that nurtures your development is what makes the greatest difference.
