Centenary of Latvian Independence and Foreign Policy

SITE has the pleasure to invite you to a presentation on Wednesday December 12, by Professor Andris Spruds, Director of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs.

Professor Spruds will speak about Latvia’s Centenary of independence and how diplomacy was instrumental in securing and regaining independence and international recognition for the small state. Achievements notwithstanding, Latvia foreign policy has faced considerable challenges during the last hundred years. The country's foreign policy has been strongly shaped by international and regional developments, and behavior of great powers in the neighborhood.

Professor Spruds holds a PhD in Political Science from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland and has been a visiting scholar at Oxford, Uppsala, Columbia and Johns Hopkins University, as well as the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and Japan's Institute of Energy Economics. His research interests focus on energy security and policy in the Baltic Sea region, the domestic and foreign policy of post-Soviet countries, and transatlantic relations.

The presentation will be chaired by Torbjörn Becker, Director of SITE and an introduction will be given by Ambassador H.E. Mr Marģers Krams, Embassy of Latvia. Time will be available for questions and answers after the presentation.
