Conference

The UN’s Secretary-General António Guterres recently observed that “across the world, democracy is backsliding”. This trend encompasses new democracies that have drifted towards electoral autocracy and established democracies where political polarization threatens institutional norms. Research can shed light on where and when democratic institutions are fragile and what can help make them resilient.

SITE and the Forum for Research on Media and Democracy in Eastern Europe (FROMDEE) invite you to a one-day academic conference on “Democratic backsliding and electoral autocracies” with a keynote lecture by Arturas Rozenas (New York University). This conference brings together researchers from economics, law, and political science. It will feature academic work on a range of democratic and autocratic countries, with a special focus on Eastern Europe and Russia. The conference will take place on 13 October 2023 in Stockholm, Sweden.

The conference is organised as part of the FREE Network initiative FROMDEE, supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

Keynote lecturer

Arturas Rozenas, Associate Professor in the Department of Politics at New York University. His research primarily focuses on authoritarian politics: the causes and consequences of state repression, information manipulation through media, propaganda, and elections, and the historical development of political institutions.

In 2021 the FREE Network initiated the Forum for Research on Media and Democracy in Eastern Europe (FROMDEE). The long-run goal of FROMDEE is to help strengthen media and democracy in the region and bring together researchers with experience doing empirical work on these topics while facilitating the exchange of data and contextual knowledge across the FREE network, as well as building capacity to work on the frontier of social and data science.
