Seminar on Asia - Center for Asian Studies
The service sector accounts for over half of GDP and employment in East Asia and Latin America. It is also a crucial driver of total factor productivity growth in the economies of both regions. In addition, the past two decades showed a fast increase in digital services trade in both parts of the world, often surpassing goods trade when including services embedded in traded goods. In his presentation, Dr. Mulder will compare East Asia and Latin America’s digital services trade dynamics. Also, he will explore the impact of trade restrictions on digital services trade between 2014 and 2021, together with other barriers to the countries’ participation in this type of trade. Moreover, he will outline the benefits of regional integration in digital services, such as job creation, added value to exports, improved competitiveness, technological adaptation, and higher participation in global value chains.
Dr. Nanno Mulder is Chief of the International Trade Unit in the Division of the International Trade and Integration of UN-ECLAC. His main areas of research, technical assistance and training are on the region’s participation in global value chains in general and digital services trade in particular, and sustainable trade with a focus on the internationalization of SMEs, gender equality and circular economy. He has a Master's and PhD in economics from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. He worked at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the French Centre for Prospective and International Studies. He is also co-founder and President of the Latin American network for research and policy on services. He is currently on sabbatical leave as a visiting fellow at the United Nations University for Comparative Regional Integration Studies in Bruges, Belgium.
