Mistra and the Kamprad Family Foundation invest millions in SSE’s sustainability hub
Over the past decade, Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets (Misum), with support from Mistra, has established itself as a leading research center focused on sustainability, working with and for society’s stakeholders. The work is now taking a major step forward through a joint initiative from Mistra and the Kamprad Family Foundation. The investment will allow the center to evolve into a larger and more long-term research hub – the House of Sustainable Society (HoSS). Here, research, practice, and policy will come together and connect to international collaborations. Of the SEK 80 million, Mistra is contributing SEK 50 million and the Kamprad Family Foundation SEK 30 million, over the next five years.
“The goal of establishing Misum was for sustainability to become an integral part of the Stockholm School of Economics and for future economists to have a solid foundation in sustainability. Through this initiative, Mistra has helped plant a lasting focus on sustainability that can continue to thrive independently,” says Maria Khorsand, CEO of Mistra.
Practical solutions for a sustainable society
Since its foundation in 2011, the Kamprad Family Foundation has awarded more than SEK 2 billion to projects in areas such as entrepreneurship, the environment, and quality of life for the elderly. Their support will make it possible to launch an Impact Lab at the Stockholm School of Economics, where researchers will work together with businesses, industry, government agencies, and civil society to develop policy-oriented and practical solutions for a more sustainable society.
“It’s important for us to support knowledge that can make a difference in people’s everyday lives. We are very pleased to support this center, which clearly links research and education, and addresses both major environmental challenges and entrepreneurship. An investment that benefits students, business, and ultimately, the many people,” says Anna Carlström, CEO of the Kamprad Family Foundation.
Research with societal impact
Misum is already a strong center focused on policy-relevant sustainability research in areas such as economics, finance, accounting, and business development. With the establishment of the House of Sustainable Society, the Impact Lab, and other initiatives, the connection between academia and society is further strengthened, ensuring that research becomes useful in practice and contributes to real change for a more sustainable society.
“We are incredibly grateful for the collaboration with our two funders, Mistra and the Kamprad Family Foundation. Their support allows us to further strengthen our research into sustainable solutions for society. At a time when sustainability efforts are being questioned from several directions, it is more important than ever to stand by research, scientific evidence, and science-based knowledge. We look forward to continued development, expanding our sustainability research, and contributing innovative solutions to society,” says Martina Björkman Nyqvist, Executive Director of Misum.
