Sanctioning Russia: Policy tools in a shifting geopolitical landscape

The Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) is hosting a timely and insightful public seminar on the evolving role of international sanctions in today’s shifting geopolitical landscape. Join us for a high-level event featuring leading experts as they unpack recent research, examine current challenges, and explore forward-looking strategies to enhance sanctions effectiveness against Russia. This seminar will also mark the official launch of SITE’s new Sanctions Web Portal—an open-access platform offering data, analysis, and resources for policymakers, journalists, and researchers.

In response to the growing complexities of international sanctions on Russia, SITE invites you to a high-level policy event exploring the current and future dimensions of sanctions policy. This forum will unite leading experts, policymakers, and researchers to examine the effectiveness of sanctions, the mechanisms of circumvention, and the strategic responses shaping global policy.

The event is structured around three keynote presentations (to be confirmed), each offering new research and insights into critical aspects of the sanctions regime:

  • Sanctions circumvention
A data-driven analysis highlighting how sanctions are currently being bypassed and what this means for enforcement policy.
  • Advancing sanctions effectiveness
A strategic session on tools and proposals to increase the impact and precision of international sanctions.
  • The Russian economy
A timely economic overview of how international restrictions are affecting Russia’s economic stability and global integration.

Additionally, the event will include:

  • An introduction of the Swedish Sanctions Coordinator
A newly created role within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs aimed at strengthening Sweden’s national sanctions framework and outreach.
  • The official launch of SITE’s Sanctions Web Portal
Developed with support from the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, this new online hub consolidates analysis, data, and resources on sanctions against Russia. The portal will be showcased during the event.
