Mini course on AI and Markets: An Industrial Organization Perspective on Artificial Intelligence

There will be two sessions in the mini-course given on Thursday April 24th (15.15-17.30) and Friday April 25th (9.15-12.00) 2025 at the Stockholm School of Economics in central Stockholm.

This course explores the role of artificial intelligence in the economy, focusing on microeconomic principles and industrial organization. Taught by Giacomo Calzolari (European University Institute), it provides a structured and accessible introduction to the economics of AI. The course begins with foundational concepts before delving into technical insights on key AI algorithms, including supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. It also examines market applications such as algorithmic pricing and recommendation systems, the structure of the AI industry, and critical discussions on policy challenges and broader implications. Designed for PhD students, this minicourse offers an excellent opportunity to enhance your understanding of AI's economic impact in an engaging and thought-provoking setting.

Giacomo Calzolari is Professor of Economics at European University Institute in Florence and one of the world’s foremost authorities on competition aspects of AI use, having advised broadly to various regulatory bodies and published in leading journals, such as the American Economic Review and Management Science.

The course is open to PhD students or PhD’s in economics and finance – subject to approval. The course is free of charge. Register your interest for the course with Kathrine Abelson (kathrine.abelson@hhs.se) before April 11th.

There will be no exam and participation does not give any credits. The course is organized by the Stockholm School of Economics and made possible by a grant from the Swedish Competition Authority.
