“Global power dynamics and the Korean Peninsula: Prospects with the new U.S. administration”

This seminar aims to enhance the understanding of South Korea’s policy on peace and security of the Korean peninsula and to reflect on how the global power dynamics affect the Korean peninsula by discussing recent developments and future prospects after the US presidential election.

Dr. Won Gon Park will assess the current security situation, including the recent rise of tensions on the Korean peninsula and military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. He will also shed light on future prospects, taking into account the incoming US administration’s foreign policy direction and its relations with the two Koreas.

Following his presentation, a discussion moderated by Dr. Patrik Ström will invite discussants to share their perspectives and insights. Dr. Anders Olofsgård will reflect on the war economy of Russia and how this affects its engagement in the region, while Dr. Jingdong Yuan will discuss the implications of China-North Korea and US-China relations.

Speaker:
Dr. Won Gon Park is a professor in the Department of North Korean Studies at Ewha Womans University and Director at the North Korea Research Center of the East Asia Institute in Korea. His main research interests include North Korea’s foreign relations, politics, military affairs, ROK-US alliance, and Northeast Asian international relations. Dr. Park holds a Ph.D. in Diplomacy from Seoul National University.
