Book launch: Provoking the Freeport Magic by Jessica Backsell

In this book, Jessica Backsell interrogates "the magic" of the art world and culture’s stubborn habit of foregrounding art as representative of an alternative value system. Backsell addresses the dichotomous ”culture v. capitalism” debate by showing how the magic often prescribed to art is not an innate and mysterious quality. Rather, it is a practice, a central yet unexplored element that unfolds through what Backsell denotes as ”conspicuous withdrawal” and forms of optical illusions. Backsell furthers that these insights can help shed light on wider political and economical issues.
During the book launch, Backsell, in discussion with colleague Mattias Hjelm will explore these linkages through a range of topics. From stories of the "Magus" and tricksters of the high renaissance to current day politics––such as the failure of liberal democracies and the rise of authoritarianism––and the wider impact on culture and market society.
