If Bildung is a process, in what ways can literature sessions in groups be seen as part of this process? In my lunchtime lecture, I will dwell on this, starting from definitions of Bildung and research on what it means to read and discuss fiction in groups. I do this by drawing on Vaihinger's thoughts on aesthetics, Nussbaum's ideas about our Western dichotomy between reason and emotion, and research on the importance of seeing reading as a meaning-making activity that shapes and influences not only individuals but also society, collectively.
