Making art meet business – a Chinese perspective on art in economies

Liu Xiao, currently deputy director of the Art Management Department of China Academy of Art, graduated from the Institute of Contemporary Art and Social Thought at the China Academy of Art.

Since 2013, Liu Xiao has initiated a long-term independent research and writing program called the 'National Highway Plan'. In addition of numerous art projects, she currently acts as academic and curatorial advisor for West Bund Museum and its collaboration with Centre Pompidou.

After management posts at the Guangdong Museum of Art and Hong Kong Qiushi Technology and Art Foundation, Liu Xiao was the official curator of the 1st West Bund Biennial of Architecture and Contemporary Art and curayed the 10th and 9th Shanghai Biennale “Reactivation” together with Qiu Zhijie and Boris Groys.

With Anselm Franke, Liu curated “Social Factory”, and the 2nd Hangzhou Fiber Art Triennial "Weaving and We".The 2019 National Art Fund Sculpture Exhibition "Journey of the People". She was the main coordinator of the early Guangzhou Triennale and Lianzhou Photography Festival.

In May 2025, Professor Liu Xiao will participate in the SSE elective course Art & Luxury with professor Pierre Guillet de Monthoux, Scientific Director of Art Initiative.
