Mini course with Professor Aljosscha Janssen

Mini course on "Scanner Data in Economics Reaearch"

There will be two sessions in the mini-course given on Tuesday May 19 (09.00-12.00)
and Wednesday May 20 (09.00-12.00) 2026 in the Sherman Room (A320) at the
Stockholm School of Economics in central Stockholm.

Scanner data such as the NielsenIQ panel distributed via the Kilts Center at University of
Chicago and Kantar’s European multi-country household panels form the basis for rapidly
developing literatures on various aspects of consumer choice and competition in markets.
This two-day mini-course equips PhD students to use retail and household scanner data
to answer research questions in Industrial Organization and quantitative Marketing, with
links to price measurement, inequality, and health policy. The aim is to understand what
scanner data are, how the main sources differ, and what kinds of research questions they
can credibly address—from broad, general-interest results to IO/marketing
applications—and to leave with a clear map of feasible projects.

Aljoscha Janssen is Assistant Professor at Singapore Management University and a
graduate of SSE. He has wide experience of working with scanner data and has published
in leading journals such as American Economic Review, Marketing Science and
Economic Journal.

The course is open to PhD students or PhD’s in economics, finance and marketing –
subject to approval. The course is free of charge. There will be a dinner (free!) for course
participants on May 19. Register for the course by signing up here  before May 8 (the early
deadline is to be able to make reservations for the dinner). For any questions please
contact Kathrine.Abelson@hhs.se.

There will be no exam and participation does not give any credits. The course is organized
by the Stockholm School of Economics and made possible by a grant from the Swedish
Competition Authority.
