Gryte Verbusaityte

Meet Gryte Verbusaityte – Manager for Small Business Product Management at American Express and MSc in Economics alum.

Describe your role and what it is that you do overall and on a day-to-day basis.

I currently manage Amex's Small Business Lending Products. In this role, I focus on small business lending needs to create credit card products and features that help them succeed and grow. This role is very collaborative and I work with marketing, risk, technology, legal teams on a daily basis to improve our product suite and how we reach our customers.

What interested you about the field/company/role you are currently in?

I wanted a role, where I would have an opportunity for a wide variety of problem solving that involved understanding consumer behavior, data analytics and making decisions that drive profitability. American Express also offers great opportunities for career growth and a good work environment.

Why did you choose to study your subject area at SSE?

I got an Msc in Economics at SSE. I always had an interest in economics and studied economics in undergraduate as well. I wanted to continue and get more exposure to economic analysis and grow my quantitative skills.

What path did you take from graduation to where you are now?

My first job after SSE was at an asset manager firm in Washington DC, where I worked for almost 3 years. I worked on data analytics and reporting there, but quickly realized I did not find the job challenging enough.

After that, I joined a credit card start up that provided a fair credit product to those with lower credit scores. This was my first experience working in consumer finance and I really enjoyed the type of work it offered. The startup faced some financing issues and I lost my job about 6 months after I joined the company. It was an interesting experience to go through, but I decided that I needed more stability in my next job.

I wanted to stay within the consumer finance business, but was looking for a more stable company, so I joined American Express US credit card portfolio team. I have been here for a little over 2 years.

Following your time studying and living in Stockholm, do you have any words of wisdom or advice you would like to share with our current students?

Make connections - SSE had a great group of students and I made some of the best friends that made my SSE experience truly incredible. Definitely try to get involved in any activities you can during your time at SSE! I did a case competition, which got me a trip to Zambia and helped organize the Nobel Night Cap. Both experiences were so unique and fun!
