Madeleine Ehn

Meet Madeleine Ehn – Senior Global Brand Manager at The Absolut Company. Madeleine is a BSc in Retail Management and MSc in Business & Management alum.

Describe your role and what it is that you do overall and on a day-to-day basis.

I have been a part of The Absolut Company for almost six years. I have moved between different marketing roles which has been very valuable for my growth, both personally and career-wise. My career at The Absolut Company started with me being tasked with structuring up a creative marketing department. The work included setting up and managing project management processes and communication flows within the organization as well as the wider Pernod Ricard group. In my recent role I’ve been managing and developing Absolut’s product portfolio which has included a re-design of the iconic Absolut Vodka Original bottle as well as the development of global limited-edition bottles. As Global Senior Brand Manager for the Product Portfolio & Innovation team, I’m a project manager leading cross-functional teams from idea to a physical product on the shelves. It includes everything from getting to know the consumer, seeking project approval from the leadership team, coordinating and leading internal functions, ensuring that the product is legally compliant and can be produced to the right cost as well as supporting sell-in through the local markets.

What interested you about the field/company/role you are currently in?

I love seeing my work come to life! Which is why I enjoy working with physical products so much. I also find it enriching to work in cross-functional teams and to find solutions to complex problems. I didn’t have much experience from the spirits industry before I joined The Absolut Company, but the best part of my job has been the people. Furthermore, it is very rewarding to work for a strong global brand which most of us have a relationship to. The spirits industry is currently going through a really interesting change where it’s about reaching the consumer through new consumption patterns and moments.

Why did you choose to study your subject area at SSE?

The technique and strategy for how to build strong consumer brands has always interested me which is why a BSc in Retail Management and a MSc in Marketing were natural choices in my educational journey.

How did your time/education at SSE help guide you to the career journey you have embarked on?

My education gave me a valuable combination of business knowledge and specialized marketing skills. SSE also gave me the opportunity to meet a lot of organizations and get a glimpse of a broad variety of industries which guided me in my career path and in my initial career choice. My years at SSE also gave me the courage to dare to try things; if you don’t dare to try something new then you won’t know if it’s something for you!

What path did you take from graduation to where you are now?

I started my career at Oriflame Cosmetics where I worked as a Global Junior Brand Manager for the cosmetics category. To develop my retail skills further, I then decided to step into the traditional fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry and join the American giant SC Johnson. I worked as a product manager for the Scandinavian market which grew my knowledge within sales and the Nordic retail market. At The Absolut Company, I’ve taken on roles as Global Market Activation Manager and most recently Global Senior Brand Manager for our product portfolio team. I find it very interesting to experience different industries. We can all learn from each other and I believe there is a lot of inspiration to be gained if we broaden our perspectives. That is the reason I, after my years at The Absolut Company, now will take the next step in my career and join the pharmaceutical industry as Omnichannel Lead for Takeda.

Following your time studying, do you have any words of wisdom or advice you would like to share with our current students?

The network you become a part of is so valuable; make the most out of it by getting to know new people, discuss a lot of and don’t forget to listen! The meetings and input you receive will guide you to the right path for you and work as a helping hand when needed.
