Vad är din grej, Jonathan?
"My name is Jonathan Bornemann. I’m 23 years old and a first-year student in the Retail Management program at the Stockholm School of Economics. My great passion in life is music.
I began to play the double-bass when I was 7 years old. I played solo as well as in orchestras and participated in music competitions in cities like Prague, Dublin and Moscow. The first CDs I bought, were with Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. I literally fell in love with pop music. Seven years later, I started to play the drums. I got interested in rock and punk and became a member of different rock and punk bands. A couple of years later I discovered electronic dance music. I was mesmerized by how much energy there was in it and how it made people dance. I started to write songs and wanted to become a songwriter and music producer. I got a mentor from the Swedish pop scene and started to learn the craft. I was fascinated by music’s ability to convey emotions and to transmit energy to other people.
In 2014, I graduated from high school and had no idea what to study. In the end, I followed my passion and went to London for a three-year songwriting and music production program. I wanted to become the next Max Martin. In 2017, I returned to Stockholm and continued to work with my music. I suddenly realized that, as a songwriter/producer, I was really an entrepreneur running my own business. But I had absolutely no idea how to do that. I knew nothing about how to promote myself, how to distribute my music, how to interpret legal contracts or understand accounting statements.
I therefore decided to apply to the Stockholm School of Economics in 2018. I hesitated a little bit as I felt that I was a couple of years older than the usual first-year students. Also, I believed that the other students were only interested in business and economics and nothing else. Luckily, all my prejudices were proven to be wrong. I’ve met so many people here with exciting backgrounds and with all kinds of fascinating goals in life. What they have in common is that they are very smart, very social and have lots of energy. I believed that I had to put my passion for music on ice during my business studies, but I started to do music in new ways. I am now DJ-ing at a lot of parties and have received fantastic feedback. I even got the opportunity to DJ the main dance floor at the Nobel afterparty. I am also playing the drums in the student-spex theatre band and getting involved in different SSE’s student association activities.
Starting at SSE was definitely the right choice for me. I knew that I would get the best business education available, but what I did not know was that I would get a network of amazing friends, privileged access to world class companies and that I would have so much fun being here. My goal in life is still to become successful in the music business. So, whatever your passion or background is, SSE will open doors you have never thought of before."
