Abstract
This paper empirically examines the impact of gender-equal laws on men's economic outcomes, challenging the conventional zero-sum perspective (ZSP) which suggests that advancements in gender equality may come at the expense of men’s economic opportunities. Using a comprehensive dataset that combines both individual-level and country-level data, we analyze the impact of gender-equal law reforms on key economic indicators, including employment, self-employment, financial inclusion, and educational attainment. We find that gender-equal laws not only enhance women's economic opportunities, but also have positive effects on men's economic outcomes. Our results show that legal reforms promoting gender equality contribute to a more inclusive and dynamic economic environment, benefiting both genders. These findings have important implications for policymakers, suggesting that advancing gender-equal legal frameworks can foster inclusive economic growth and improve overall societal well-being.
