Wages, Experience and Training of Women over the Lifecycle with Richard Blundell, Monica Costa Dias, Costas Meghir
Abstract: We investigate the role of formal training versus learning-by-doing as alternative sources of human capital for women, using UK panel data. We estimate a lifecycle model where agents can accumulate human capital actively, through training courses, and passively, through work experience. Exploiting tax and benefit changes over an 18 year period, we identify the impact of training and experience on women's wages, earnings and employment. We evaluate the role of training and experience in the evolution of wages and employment, conditional on education, and quantify the effectiveness of revenue-neutral training subsidies in closing the gender pay gap. We find that training can be important in compensating for losses in human capital that occur during time out of the labour market due to children, especially for women who left education after completing high school.
The EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR TRAINING IN ECONOMIC RESEARCH (ENTER) is a cooperative venture between eight leading European Economics Departments, located in Barcelona (Spain), Brussels (Belgium), London (United Kingdom), Madrid (Spain), Mannheim (Germany), Stockholm (Sweden), Tilburg (the Netherlands) and Toulouse (France).
ENTER exchange seminars offer students the possibility to visit universities in the network to present papers and interact with students and faculty members in the other institutions.
