Center for Market Studies
The Center's mission is to address the needs of students, academics, industry and society for research and education concerning foremost business markets and marketing.
The Center for Market Studies, CMS (former Center for the Studie of Business Markets) for has a long history and is one of the oldest at SSE. We deliver several courses on markets and business marketing within the bachelor and master programs at SSE.
Our research focuses on understanding different types of markets and market systems, and how various actors take action within these market contexts. One important theoretical heritage uniting the majority of the researchers is the "markets as networks"- paradigm. More recently, a significant share of our research output is linked to the market studies field, drawing inspiration from economic sociology as well as science and technology studies. We identify six major areas in which several researchers actively contribute:
- Transports, Supply Chains and Distribution Systems
- Internationalisation of Firms and International Marketing
- Institutional and Technological Change Including Knowledge Development
- Market Policy and the Construction and function of Markets
- Sustainable Development from a Market Perspective including Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility
- Buyer- Seller Relationships, Purchasing and Sales
- Business Strategy and Business Networks
We define our task as developing knowledge about markets, how such systems and actors in them operate and can be influenced. This means that we cover issues such as marketing and sales, purchasing and supply chain management, technology enabled business (ICT), technology development and diffusion, institutional mechanisms in markets and their impact, international marketing, retailing and distribution, sustainability, etc.
The industries and business covered in our research include telecom and ICT, transports, retailing, banking, manufacturing, physical infrastructure, health care, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, airlines, etc. This means a nice blend of goods and services industries.
The Center for Market Studies is a research center at SIR, Stockholm School of Economics Institute for Research. SIR is a national research institute for the economic sciences, with a focus on Business Administration in the broadest sense.
