Welcome to our two-part exhibition in October, focusing on one of Modern Art’s most influential figures – Marcel Duchamp.

On the 2 October, the Dadaist film Anemic Cinema (1926) by Marcel Duchamp will be screened in the SSE Atrium, in a year-long collaboration with Moderna Museet. On the 4 October, architect Damjan Jovanovic will exhibit his interactive work The Third Glass (2017), a Virtual Reality experience, based on the work by Marcel Duchamp, known as The Large Glass. Both works are utilizes contemporary artistic media and technologies, and shows some of the most important artworks of the 20th Century in a new light.

The film Anemic Cinema is a milestone in cinematic and artistic history. The film depicts spinning animated drawings—which Duchamp called Rotoreliefs — juxtaposed with with puns in French, typical in many of the works of Duchamp. He also signed the film with his alter ego name, Rrose Sélavy, a female character that Duchamp sometimes interspliced in his work, both as a pun and as a theoretical framing device.

Damjan Jovanovic’s work The Third Glass is a virtual reality-experience, based on Marcel Duchamp’s glass painting The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even or as it is commonly known today,The Large Glass. In it, each element in Duchamp’s Large Glass becomes a three-dimensional form, animated in accordance to notes in Duchamp’s Green Box.

The audience will be able to move in between the different digital versions of the objects in the glass painting by Duchamp and experience it in a unique way. The project has been produced by the Städelschule Architecture Class (SAC) for Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Its first staging was at the Städelschule Rundgang 2017, the art academy’s annual student exhibition.

Damjan Jovanovic is a Research Associate at Städelschule Architecture Class and speaciadizes in investigations of the cultural effects of software in architectural design through the development of non-standard design tools, as means of questioning the prevalent design defaults.
