How has COVID-19 affected the mobility of Swedes?

A paper by Matz Dahlberg (IBF, UU, IFAU) and a group of Uppsala-based researchers suggests that changes in mobility patterns are similar across geographic areas with different socioeconomic and demographic characteristics.

The paper analyses the spacial mobility of Swedish phone users in late March 2020 as compared to January 2020 in a Difference-in-differences setting. The analysis reveals significant increases in the fraction of phone users who stay home, decreases in movement in industrial and commercial areas and declines in distances travelled. A contribution of the paper is to show that behavioural changes do not differ across areas based on socioeconomic and other demographic  characteristics of the residents.
