Physical inactivity kills just as many people as smoking does. Meanwhile, Swedish healthcare costs are increasing by 4.2 % a year and reached a total of 525 billion SEK in2018. As the sedentary lifestyle and healthcare costs are rapidly increasing in society, we, therefore, had to act.
A solution to prevent and mitigate the rising healthcare costs in society is regular exercise. Strength training has been shown to provide a multitude of positive effects on your health and quality of life. Moreover, it is worrisome that the devastating spread of COVID-19 pandemic has further restricted the possibilities for physical activity. By targeting Sustainable Development Goal #3, Good Health and Well-Being, we strive to have a positive impact on physical training among elderly, as well as helping the Swedish healthcare system to face society's rising healthcare costs.
Through a partnership with Styrkelabbet, we created a training program targeted at the elderly, that does not require any equipment and is freely available through an application. By establishing a pilot strategic partnership with the large senior and retirement home provider Bonum, over 2000 elderly have been reached and gained access to the exercise program. A guide on how to download and use the program has also been distributed, as well as a printed version of the program with exercises that can be done without the application. After evaluating the pilot project, we aim to find additional partners that will send out the program to their members.
