What is the role and responsibility of the business community in alleviating poverty?

With recent reductions in international aid contributions, eradicating poverty is becoming increasingly challenging. Ending poverty requires cross-sectoral partnerships and engagement from all parts of society, not least the private sector. On October 5, Misum Forum 2022 is hosting prominent Swedish industry leaders and internationally renowned academics to discuss the role business and industry can, and possibly should, play in reducing poverty globally.

Misum researchers Ting Dong and Milda Tylaite examine the Swedish audit regime shift in 2010 which removed mandatory audit requirements for small private companies. Their study highlights the resulting shift in bargaining power between auditors and their clients along with implications for private firms’ tax reporting.

The energy and climate crisis facing Europe: How to strike the right balance

Policymakers in Europe are currently faced with the difficult task of reducing our reliance on Russian oil and gas without worsening the situation for firms and households that are struggling with high energy prices. The two options available are either to substitute fossil fuel imports from Russia with imports from other countries and cut energy tax rates to reduce the impacts on firms and household budgets, or to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels entirely by investing heavily in low-carbon energy production.
