[CANCELLED] Misum Brown Bag: Ismail Ertürk on financialization and shareholder primacy

On Thursday 12 March 2020, Misum has the pleasure of welcoming Ismail Ertürk, Senior Lecturer in Banking at Alliance Manchester Business School, for a Brown Bag Lunch. Dr. Ertürk’s research focuses on critical perspectives on financialization and financial innovation and he will present current work, including a chapter in the The Routledge International Handbook of Financialization (editors Philip Mader, Daniel Mertens and Natascha van der Zwan, Routledge).

The chapter presented takes its starting point in the notion of financialization and explores shareholder primacy, or the idea that the purpose of the firm is to prioritize the financial interests of the shareholders, providers of capital to the firm. In the neoliberal era the shareholder value maximization principle has become the dominant corporate governance practice that has gained legitimacy through management education and consultancy recipes.

Beyond this, he has published extensively on financial citizenship, inequality, shadow banking, banking regulation as well as other related topics.

Dr. Ertürk also has an ongoing collaboration with contemporary Stockholm artists Goldin+Sennerby. One part of the collaboration is the Banca Rotta, a series of money changer’s tables, which we recognize from the Stockholm School of Economics library.
