Highlights from the Misum Forum 2022 on the role of business and industry in alleviating poverty

On October 5, Misum convened business leaders from Swedish industry and high-level academics to discuss the role and responsibility of businesses in reducing poverty globally. If you missed the chance to join us in person at the event, or if you would like to revisit some of the sessions, all event recordings are now available, together with highlights from the day.

We were joined in person at the Stockholm School of Economics by over 160 participants from academia, the private and public sectors, NGOs and civil society alike. You can now find all the recordings from the event or browse through some photos from the day.

Some highlights:

  • HRH Prince Daniel of Sweden opened the event with a short address focused on current global challenges and their impact on poverty rates worldwide.
  • Swedish industry leaders Carl Bennet and Marcus Wallenberg shared their perspectives on the broad question posed at the Forum, the role and responsibility of business and industry in poverty alleviation.
  • Five sustainability directors from Atlas Copco, Ericsson, Saab, Sweco and Swedfund addressed a wide range of topics on the role of global enterprises in poverty reduction, including local income generation, access to education, social projects, human rights, and corruption.
  • Prof. Adnan Khan (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, FCDO) delivered an academic address focused on “the jobs challenge” and the role of governments in developing policies that support job creation, together with the responsibility of businesses in following responsible business practices.
  • During the academic afternoon Prof. Oriana Bandiera (London School of Economics and Political Science, LSE), Prof. Abhijit Banerjee (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT), Prof. Minna Halme (Aalto University) and Prof. Frank Schilbach (MIT) delivered research talks covering the economics of poverty, jobs and poverty reduction strategies, learnings from randomized controlled trials on fighting poverty, the role of innovations in reducing poverty, and the impact of financial concerns on worker productivity.
