Martin Carlsson Wall appointed professor at SSE

Martin Carlsson Wall has been appointed professor of accounting at the Stockholm School of Economics. Martin Carlsson Wall’s research explores the intersection between accounting, creativity, sports and emotions.

Martin Carlsson Wall defended his PhD in 2011. Focusing on the development of industrial robots, he studied the role accounting plays in large scale innovation projects. This was then followed by studies in other high-tech sectors such as telecom and aerospace where innovation projects are costly but can have a significant profitability and growth potential if they are successful.

In 2015, Martin founded the Center for Sports and Business. Working closely with sports both in Sweden and abroad, Martin’s research has studied how clubs, leagues and federations use accounting to navigate the delicate balance of combining multiple institutional logics related to commercialization, membership democracy and public funding.

“Throughout my academic career, I have been interested in studying accounting in situations where one might not expect it. It started in my PhD when I explored the connection between accounting and creativity and now with sports, it has continued with studies of how accounting relates to emotions and passionate interests. The global sport landscape is currently facing many challenges and its fascinating to study these processes in real time as they progress.”

In the coming years, the Center for Sports and Business will continue to support the development of Swedish sports. Areas where the center hopes to make contributions relate to governance, improving gender balance and how sport organizations can embrace and thrive as hybrid organizations.

Describing the motivation behind the promotion, SSE President Lars Strannegård says:

“Martin is a good example of the type of professor SSE wants to develop. He publishes at the highest international level at the same time as his research has real impact in practice. Martin’s research is innovative in that he studies accounting in relation to creativity, sport and emotions. These new combinations drive the research frontier forward, both in accounting in other related fields.”
