Meetings: Everywhere and Nowhere

May 2 10.00 AM-11.30 AM
Score, Frescativägen 14A

Helen B Schwartzman and Renita Thedvall will be presenting on the topic of meetings in field research.

Meetings are one of the most prevalent contemporary sites of ethnographic engagement. In policy organizations and community centers, bureaucratic and religious institutions, schools and corporations, working among militant activists and networking professionals alike, researchers doing participant observation often find that formal and associated informal meetings are where a great deal of the action is. Furthermore, with state affairs, corporate business and social movements often taking inter- and transnational forms, meetings are also the little-interrogated ‘infrastructure’ under which the much-discussed transnational flows of knowledge, capital, policy, cultural forms, and protest unfold.

The presentation centers on Schwartzman’s long engagement with meetings and ethnographic research in organizations most notably in the book The Meeting from 1989 and an upcoming volume called Meeting Ethnography edited by Jen Sandler and Renita Thedvall.
