Open seminar at Score: Atomistic Unity in the French Foreign Legion
15 September at 14.30 - 16.30, Score’s seminar room, Kräftriket, Building 7A
Mikaela Sundberg, associate professor at the Department of Sociology and Score, Stockholm University
How is regimental life in the French Foreign Legion organized? And in which ways do different kinds of social orders interplay within the Legion?
In the new book A Sociology of the Total Organization: Atomistic Unity in the French Foreign Legion, Mikaela Sundberg addresses the questions above.
On the basis of a rich and unique ethnographic study, the book describes everyday life in the regimental barracks of one of the most famous military forces in the world.
It also develops the notion of atomistic unity, the ideal relational condition that exists in the military, in which individuals commit to a unit and articulate ties with individuals on an impersonal basis, grounded in the belief in a greater whole.
Mikaela Sundberg is associate professor at the Department of Sociology and Score, Stockholm University.
Commentators: Roine Johanssson, professor in sociology at Mid Sweden University and Tove Pettersson, associate professor in criminology at Stockholm University.
After the seminar refreshments and snacks are served.
