History course takes SSE students to Washington, D.C.

Last week students visited the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies as part of their course in applied history. They listened to lectures about the Cold War from leading scholars and visited historical sites in the American capital.

The course Applied History: World Orders and Present Challenges has been given to students of the Stockholm School of Economics since 2020. It gives students an opportunity to learn about important historical events from leading experts, as well as to apply historical lessons to contemporary challenges.

In March, the course visited the University of Cambridge to learn about topics such as Chinese history and the rise of Hitler. Last week, the journey went to Washington, D.C., where the student group visited the Henry A. Kissinger Center for International Affairs. They were taught on topics linked to the Cold War and its aftermath by academics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Harvard University, Tufts University, and the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.

Upon completion of the course, student essays will be published in an edited anthology. The 2020 and 2021 editions are available in online bookstores.

The course is funded by the Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation for Public Benefit. The Center for Statecraft and Political Communication forms part of the Ax:son Johnson Institute for Statecraft and Diplomacy together with its partner centers in Cambridge, London and Washington, D.C.
