Udo is Professor of Business Administration, esp. International Business, at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) in Sweden. He is a Fellow of the Academy of International Business and an elected Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, as well as the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (responsible for selecting Nobel laureates). He recently received an Honorary Doctorate (doctor honoris causa) from Aalto University in Finland.
His research interests are international management (including strategy, organization, innovation, change and learning in the multinational company), knowledge and the theory of the firm, and the power of ideas. He has published in journals like American Sociological Review, British Journal of Management, European Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Management International Review, Management Science, Organization Science, R&D Management, Research Policy, Scandinavian Journal of Management, and Thunderbird International Business Review. Udo is incoming Associate Editor at Academy of Management Review.
His academic background includes studies at the Stockholm School of Economics (M.Sc. 1986; Ph.D. 1991) and as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (IB/OB 1986-87) and Stanford University (OB 1987). He has been visiting professor at Stanford University (1994), at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (1995), Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand (2007-2009), and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2016-2017).
Udo has been a Board Member of the Jacob Wallenberg Foundation, the Stockholm School of Economics, the Board of Trustees of the Sweden-America Foundation, the European Doctoral Programmes Association for Management and Business Administration, the Academy of International Business, and the Center for Advanced Studies in Leadership. He works as an expert evaluator at the European Research Council (ERC), Social Sciences and Humanities Domain, and is Chairman of the Jury for the Gunnar Hedlund Award for Best Ph.D. Dissertation in International Business.
Udo has taught at the undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, and executive programs at SSE, Aalto University, STOA’ Academy, Victoria University of Wellington, and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2004, he was voted Teacher of the Year at SSE. Udo has also worked with students and executives in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, The People’s Republic of China, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and Turkey.
