2017 AThina swahn and anja tuneld
Athina Swahn and Anja Tuneld, BSc students at Stockholm School of Economics, are the recipients of 2017 Gun and Einar Larsson Scholarship (GELS).
The title of the project is Speak up! Solutions of Gender Inequality. The project will take place in USA.
During their first semester at SSE, Anja and Athina noted that virtually only male
students raised their hands during class. When they asked themselves why they did not do anything to change the situation, they realized that they had not started their school careers this way. They were both originally very keen on participating in the classroom, but somewhere along the way they gradually stopped raising their hands, and so did many other female students.
This issue stems from gender structures that is deeply rooted in today's society. Even at SSE, with talented and highly motivated students, many female students find alternative ways to understand the material rather than asking during class. Athina and Anja acknowledge that they cannot change these fundamental structures by doing one project. However, they believe that methods and tricks to facilitate participation for everyone are bound to exist. During the summer of 2017 they visit schools in USA, where the emphasis on oral participation is much greater, to find inspiration in order to propose practical solutions to Swedish schools.
