Lunch Seminar - Combining Passion & Rationality - Finding a Dream Career within Sports

The Stockholm School of Economics' SSE Sport Initiative officially launched this week with a lunch seminar on Tuesday, August 9th, on the topic of "Combining Passion and Rationality - Finding a Dream Career within Sports". Over 50 newly admitted SSE Bachelor Students attended the event, which was fully booked within a day.

Martin Carlsson-Wall, Associate Professor at SSe and Director for the Center for Sports & Business, discussed sports in the context of "a world of passion and (ir)rationality". He touched upon how the sports world is portrayed on screen, mentioned some future leaders in the global sports industry (such as Jasmine Robinson, Tea Stefani, Daniel Beiderbeck, and Nicolas Frevel) and their respective career paths, and highlighted the wide range of opportunities available in the global sports industry.

  • First, there is the more conventional and traditional way of starting a career within sports organizations such as clubs, leagues, and federations.
  • However, there are positions in investment, consultancy, sports media, sponsorship, and sports technology that also present exciting opportunities.
  • Areas that are underestimated are the realms of academia, policymaking, as well as cities.

Three things students need to remember according to Carlsson-Wall:

  • Many sports organizations are hybrid organizations
  • Sports organizations are still developing their absorptive capacity
  • The development journey needs to be divided into several concrete phases

The SSE Sport Initiative is a newly created venue, part of the SSE Initiatives - including Art, Sport & Tech.

The SSE Initiatives are...

  • Immersive, action-based activities
  • Co-created and Co-delivered by the SSE community - faculty, staff, alumni and partners - with students at the core.
  • Inspired by and enacting the SSE's educational mission FREE: Fact-based, Reflective, Empathetic, and Entrepreneurial.

Exciting to have kicked off this journey towards embedding sports at the School, making SSE more knowledge-intensive and improving academic life and student health. Very exciting considering the engagement and interest from the students.

Much more activiites and events will take place this upcoming fall!
