Jesper Roine is "Swede of the year" in Economics together with co-writers of Ekonomistas

Since 2006, the magazine Fokus has given an annual award – “Swede of the year” – in different categories to Swedes who have contributed to society. This year, the recipients of the award in Economics are the writers behind the blog Ekonomistas, one of whom is SITE Associate Professor Jesper Roine.

The blog Ekonomistas was created in 2008 and it deals with various topics related to economics research, such as welfare, the environment and the housing market. The writers behind the blog and the recipients of the award are Harry Flam, Professor at IIES, Jesper Roine, Associate Professor at SITE, Lars E.O. Svensson, Affiliated Professor at the Department of Economics at SSE and Affiliated Professor at IIES, Daniel Waldenström, Professor at IFN and Paris School of Economics, Jonas Vlachos, Professor at Stockholm University and researcher at IFN and Robert Östling, Associate Professor at IIES.

The winners were presented at an award ceremony at Cirkus in Stockholm on December 14th with the following motivation (translated into English):

“For many “The Third Assignment” [i.e. public outreach] sounds like a movie title, but there are still academics who know what it means. For ten years, a group of economists have freely and objectively discussed socioeconomic issues in a blog format, in a manner that also benefits laymen. In this way, they have kept up the best of the tradition of community engagement that has existed among Swedish Economists ever since Knut Wicksell. They show that it is possible to defy polarization, resistance of facts and fear of unwanted truths. This year's Economic Swedes is the group behind the blog Ekonomistas.”
