Last chance to register for event with Mikhail Kasyanov, Former Prime Minister of Russia
The Stockholm Institute of Transition Economic (SITE) has the pleasure to invite you to a presentation on Thursday, November 16, 15.00-16.00 by Mikhail Kasyanov, Former Prime Minister of Russia and an outspoken critic of President Putin.
Kasyanov was the Prime Minister of Russia from May 2000 to February 2004. Since being dismissed in 2004 by Putin he has been an important part of the opposition. Currently, he is the leader and chairman of the political party People's Freedom Party, the leader of the movement People’s Democratic Union and an outspoken critic of President Putin and government’s policy. Kasyanov critiques Putin’s regime for not doing well-needed reforms and for being undemocratic. “In a short period of time, Putin managed to destroy the whole institutes of the democratic state, right now we don’t have a single feature of democratic state.” said Kasyanov in an interview with Canada2020 in 2014.
Being a part of the opposition in Russia is not easy. In 2015, Boris Nemtsov, one of the other leaders of the People’s Freedom Party, was assassinated. Kasyanov has received many threats and been assaulted on several occasions over the years – in 2016, Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Russia’s Chechnya republic, uploaded a video of Kasyanov as viewed through what appears to be a rifle scope on Instagram. In an interview with Reuters last year, Kasyanov said: “The authorities want to stop my political activity with threats. They want to force me out of the country. Their aim is to frighten me. But I have decided that I am going to continue with my activity.”.
On November 16, Kasyanov will be giving a presentation on the political situation in Russia. The presentation will be introduced and chaired by Torbjörn Becker, Director of SITE. After the presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. We look forward to seeing you there since the event is a rare opportunity to get insights about the political situation in Russia and ask questions to Kasyanov himself. Over 140 people have already registered to attend the event.
Location: Stockholm School of Economics, the Aula Lecture Hall. Entrance from Bertil Ohlins Gata 4.
Date: Thursday, November 16, 15.00 – 16.00 starting with registration and coffee at 14.30.
The number of seats for this event is limited, therefore we invite you to register for the event as soon as possible, but not later than Thursday, November 9, 2017.
