Purchasing process and deciding on distribution at a retailing monopoly

Systembolaget´s Retail Club had a workshop aiming to describe the sustainability and assortment strategies of the company.

The first half of the workshop included insight into how Systembolaget complies with the requirements of being transparent, non-discriminatory, and objective when buying and the challenges connected. These requirements entail, e.g., that all suppliers of Systembolaget should be treated equally and can set their prices individually themselves. The purchasing process was described as a circular process where quality is the determining factor for which products will be included in the assortment. Additionally, the workshop elaborated on the nature of being a monopoly and how to drive change.

The next part included presentations on the following; How can Systembolaget help the customer navigate the shelf better and choose a more sustainable product? Students suggested color-coding, creating a sense of community, and co-exposing the same product with different packaging.

Thanks to Fredrik Arenander, Head of Purchasing Team and Ulf Sjödin, Head of Category Management at Systembolaget for hosting this insightful and interactive workshop.
