Daniela Bolmsjö is one of our alumni that started at Stockholm School of Economics for her Bachelor studies, continued for the Master's degree and ended up with a career that led her to a project assignment abroad. Today we want to give you some inspiration from one of our Business & Management graduates.
Daniela’s current position is ‘Business Analyst at Ericsson Management Consulting’. In her role, she solves key strategic business problems together with her project team. She also leads workshops, perform interviews and conducts data analysis together with the clients.
– I am interacting closely with senior management across the Ericsson Group, to secure results and take part in international projects, including travel to our ten global regions. Currently, I am working in Dallas, Texas on a five-month assignment, with focus on operational efficiency and change management.
There is nothing as good at SSE as the people you meet every day. Different schools can teach the same curriculums, and offer the same books, however, the professors and people you meet on a daily basis cannot be duplicated.
Daniela Bolmsjö, Business & Management graduate
When starting your studies, it naturally comes along with a lot of different expectations. In Daniela’s case she had a quite explicit vision. Her expectations were that she would study in an environment that enabled her to:
- Develop a solid understanding around the world economy and the different business industries and markets. It’s my understanding that these two create a solid base to be able to become a successful leader in today's global environment.
- Develop a toolbox for my future career in how to solve complex problems, structure analysis and hypothesis, execute on ideas, and perhaps most important, get first-hand experience from working together with SSE partner companies, to support theory in my education.
- Study in an environment where brainstorming and creativity is highly encouraged.
- Meet driven and ambitious students with the same interests as me.
- Join an awesome student association.
So, how well did your anticipations match the reality?
After five years at Stockholm School of Economics, every expectation of mine has truly been fulfilled. Besides achieving a first class education, I gained true lasting friendships on the way.
Let us know how you consider Stockholm as a study destination?
My believe is that, when choosing university, many think of Stockholm as a dull study destination because of its lack of consolidated student density. This however, is nothing like the reality. Stockholm offers great amount of activities for students. The amazing student association of SSE, SASSE, offers activities on daily basis, with everything from sport to great parties. It’s quite impossible to stay bored. Further, with the other large schools (KTH and KI) being close by, there are a lot of activities being arranged together.
What kinds of skills, tools and disciplinary knowledge have been important for your recruitment?
The difference between a Master and a Bachelor is basically the practical course assignment and case material that the Master is based on. While in the Bachelor, students are given a theoretical toolbox, the Master studies give an invaluable toolbox for a wider business understanding, by applying all previous learning into actual business problems. When applying for my graduate position, my business understanding, as well as leadership drive, developed throughout my Master has been critical. Also, I have learned the great importance to structure work and develop an analytical skillset that I am using on a daily basis in my current position.
For your professional growth and current position?
My master studies included multiple team assignment in each course, and a key learning for me has been to take the opportunity to lead the team to reach wanted outcome. This highly develops leadership skills as well as an understanding of how to work with people you might or might not be familiar with. In my current position, this has made me aware of my presence and how to work together with clients, as well as how to target and quickly address critical milestones to reach successful outcome.
Any course or learning that was particularly useful?
My tip when it comes to courses is to not be too narrow when choosing courses, and to always stay curious in all areas. I believe a critical success factor in my own development, has been to always want to learn more, and to not be satisfied with what’s already provided. My greatest learning has been to develop a solid basis in every critical business area, such as Management, Marketing, Accounting & Financial Statements, as well as Corporate Finance. For myself, this has been a very strong input to my analytical skillset and ways of assessing critical business problems.
Why would you suggest a future student to take the Master program at SSE?
At a Bachelor level, SSE is providing an invaluable theoretical toolbox. However, the Master lets you apply your toolbox on real cases. In my two years at the Business & Management Master at SSE, I met with different companies every week in each course, where the company representative shared business critical problems, which the class got the opportunity to assess. Thus, at a Master level you will develop an understanding on another level than one could complete at a Bachelor level. On a side note, many companies today are initiating to require a Master’s degree today.
What advice would you give them if they finally choose SSE and the Business & Management program?
To someone that will enroll SSE, and specifically Business & Management program, I would like to advise you to fully embrace the course assignment that is given. There are many consulting assignment, where the student gets the opportunity to work with partner companies on a weekly basis. Take the opportunity to take leadership positions within the teams, and challenge yourself to take the challenging method to the results.
Last but not least, what were the most positive things about being a student at SSE?
There is nothing as good at SSE as the people you meet every day. Different schools can teach the same curriculums, and offer the same books, however, the professors and people you meet on a daily basis cannot be duplicated. To meet an amazing and inspiring class every day, who always pushes you to become better, is an experience that I am incredible thankful for have been a part of.
