Book talk: Sovjet – Som det verkligen var (Soviet – As It Really Was)
About the event
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, economist Anders Åslund, a leading specialist on Russia’s political economy, served as an economic adviser to the Russian government as the country attempted to shift from a communist planned economy to a Western market economy. The transition proved difficult: Russia became a market economy, but not a democracy governed by the rule of law.
Åslund’s new book, Sovjet – Som det verkligen var, draws on his memoranda to Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, documents that significantly influenced Sweden’s assessment of developments in the late Soviet Union.
