Development day 2020: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Eastern Europe

The annual SITE Development day 2020 will focus on the impact of the COVID-crisis in Eastern Europe, Russia and the Eastern Partnership countries. The webinar will feature Peter Eriksson, Minister for International Development Cooperation and plenty of international and domestic experts discussing the public health, economic and political ramifications of the crisis in the region.

Introduction video by Anders Olofsgård

At the onset of the COVID-pandemic Eastern Europe was labeled as an exception, with much lower rates of recorded infections and dead compared to Western Europe. During the current phase of the pandemic, however, some of the countries in the region belong to the ones most affected. This is both a health and an economic crisis, and it also carries potential political consequences most dramatically seen in Belarus.

Effects are immediately felt as the number of infected and dead increases, and as unemployment soars while income takes a hit. There are also more longer-term consequences, though, with potential implications for the region as a political and economic partner of Sweden. Will the crisis trigger needed reforms and investments, will global value-chains become more regional, what else is in store?

Join us for a full day webinar on the situation in Eastern Europe, Russia and the Eastern Partnership countries. The webinar will feature Peter Eriksson, Minister for International Development Cooperation and plenty of international and domestic experts discussing the public health, economic and political ramifications of the crisis in the region.
