History

Since its foundation in 1989 SITE has contributed in building independent think tanks in Belarus, Georgia, Latvia, Poland, Russia and Ukraine strengthening the link between high-quality research and policy making.

SITE'S HISTORY

1989
Östekonomiska Institutet is founded in Stockholm.
Anders Åslund is the first Director (1989-1994).

1995
Carl B. Hamilton is the Director 1995-1996.

1996
Östekonomiska Institutet changes name to the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE).
Erik Berglöf enters as the new Director (1996-2005).

1997
RECEP (Russian European Center for Economic Policy) is founded in Moscow by SITE with funding from the EU.

2000
RECEP is reborn as CEFIR (Center for Economic and Financial Research) now with financial support of Lisbet Rausing Charitable Fund.

2001
BICEPS (Baltic International Centre for Economic Policy Studies) is founded by SITE in Riga.

2003
WISER (Warsaw Institute for Socio-Economic Research) is founded by SITE in Warsaw.

2005
KEI (Kiev Economics Institute) is founded by SITE with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
Erik Berglöf leaves SITE for a position as Chief Analyst at the EBRD in London.

2006
Torbjörn Becker enters as the new Director, leaving the IMF in Washington, D.C.

2008
SITE receives funds from SIDA to start BEROC (Belarus Economic Research and Outreach Centre) in Kiev.

2009
SITE celebrates its 20th Anniversary.

2011
ISET Policy Institute is founded in Tbilisi, Georgia, one of the first university-based think-tanks in the South Caucauses covering also Armenia and Azerbaijan.

2019
The FREE network with support from SIDA, launches a network-wide Center of Excellence in Gender Economics (FROGEE). SITE celebrates its 30th Anniversary.
